Prenatal Diagnosis in Older Pregnant
There are many reasons why more and more women who choose to delay childbearing. Currently, first-time mothers over 35 years of age represent 20% of the total.
from that age, the chances of the fetus developing disease are greatly increased. Therefore, in these cases, prenatal diagnostic tests become more important. Must be able to distinguish between two types of techniques:
- Invasive: are those that require direct action in the uterus of the pregnant woman. This group is the amniocentesis (analysis of a sample taken from the amniotic fluid) and chorionic villus sampling (analysis of cells from the placenta). Both tests provide an accuracy of 98% and a minimum risk of abortion. The problem of amniocentesis is that the diagnosis is obtained when the pregnancy is already well advanced.
- Non-invasive: both high-resolution ultrasound to measure parameters such as fetal nasal bone and folding of the neck, as blood tests for the mother to determine the levels of some substances are some of the tests in this group. The results could lead to the need to perform invasive tests.
